Why I built this

Hi, I'm Tim.

OurFamilyGrid didn't start as a business — it started because I was tired of our family's life being spread across ten different apps. A calendar here, a shared list there, bank statements somewhere else, appointments scribbled on paper. I wanted one place that actually understood how a household runs, so I built it for my own family first — me, my partner, and our daughter: the calendar, the tasks, the finances, the car's MOT reminders, the garden, and — most recently — trip planning, all in one login.

Once it worked for us, I opened it up so other families could use it too. By day I'm a chef, and the same code grew into OurKitchenGrid, the system I use to run a real pub kitchen: stock, menus and the till.

There's no investor and no ad network, and nothing about you is sold. I pay the running costs myself (about £200 a year for the server and domains), and donations help keep it free. If it helps your household half as much as it's helped mine, it's done its job.

Is this just a data-mining site?

Fair question for any free app that asks about your family. Here are straight answers you can check.

No ads. No trackers.

There are no advertising or analytics trackers on any OurFamilyGrid page, this one included. View the page source and see for yourself. One cookie keeps you logged in, and that's it.

Paid for by me, not your data

It runs on one rented server. The server and domains cost me about £200 a year, and I pay it myself. None of your data is sold to cover it. Add-ons, like Care Circle or School Hub, are optional extras you switch on for the bigger jobs (free while we test them). Nothing that's part of OurFamilyGrid is ever moved behind them. Bigger features like Health and Travel could easily have been paid extras. They're not. They're part of OurFamilyGrid, free. If you want to help, there's a GoFundMe, but it's never required.

Profile → Download my data gives you everything in one zip file, photos included. Delete your account and your data goes with it, files included (and the whole household, if you're the last one in it).

Properly encrypted

Your password vault is locked with a key derived from your own login, so we couldn't read it even if asked. Bank transaction details are encrypted too.

Hosted in Manchester, UK

Under UK data protection law. A few optional features (AI photo help, MOT lookups, phone notifications) use named outside services, all listed in the privacy policy with exactly what they get.
